Cement sales in Puerto Rico saw a significant increase in January 2023, with a total of 1.2 million 94-pound bags sold, marking a 7.8% rise from the same month in the previous year. This data, provided by the Institute of Statistics, serves as an early indicator of the construction industry's activity.

After experiencing a modest increase of 1.3% at the end of 2023, following a 6.8% decline in 2022, the cement sales figures indicate a positive start to the year. However, it's noteworthy that cement production saw a decrease of 14.4% in January, totaling 643,400 94-pound bags. This marks the third consecutive month of decline in production, despite an 8.6% growth in production throughout 2023, which was the second consecutive year of increase.

The contrasting trends between sales and production highlight the dynamic nature of the construction materials market and suggest a complex interplay of factors influencing the industry's performance in Puerto Rico.
