Cementos Molins Launches New Cements and Concretes with Lower CO2 Emissions

Cementos Molins has introduced new cement and concrete products with a reduced carbon footprint, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050.

Cementos Molins Launches New Cements and Concretes with Lower CO2 Emissions

As part of its 'Sustainability Roadmap 2030' strategy, the company has unveiled two new types of Portland cement, which are used to produce the discussed concretes. These innovations result in up to a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the current Type I cement products of the same resistance category.

Key Points:

  • Innovative Cement Solutions: Cementos Molins has launched two innovative cement solutions, DRAGON BM-PL (CEM II/B-M (P-L) 42,5R) and DRAGON IV-SR (CEM IV/A (P) 42.5 R-SR), designed for various construction sector applications. The first is intended for the production of concretes and mortars, while the second is suitable for use in marine submerged works or in soils with high sulfate content.
  • Commitment to Circular Economy: Over 55% of the fuels used in the production of these new cements are alternative fuels, minimizing the use of fossil fuels and giving industrial waste a second life. The addition of different types of materials during the cement grinding process further reduces CO2 emissions.
  • Promsa's Role: Promsa, Cementos Molins' business unit for concrete, mortar, and aggregates, now produces all its concretes with the new lower carbon footprint cement, achieving up to a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions. The new concrete can also incorporate recycled aggregates in its manufacturing process.

Sustainability Roadmap 2030:
Cementos Molins' announcement aligns with its 'Sustainability Roadmap 2030,' aiming to cut emissions by 20% by 2030 compared to 2020. This commitment accelerates the company's emission reduction plans initiated in 1990, focusing on supplying carbon-neutral concrete by 2050. The roadmap emphasizes sustainability as the core of Cementos Molins' strategy, addressing priorities such as Safety and Health, Climate Change and Energy, Environment and Nature, Circular Economy, and Corporate Social Responsibility.

Comments from Cementos Molins:
Salvador Fernández, Area Manager Mexico, Spain OPC, Cement & Concrete at Cementos Molins, stated that launching low-carbon cements and concretes is a step towards achieving their roadmap and producing carbon-neutral concrete by 2050. He highlighted the company's goal to enhance social development and quality of life through innovative and sustainable construction solutions. However, achieving carbon neutrality requires support, action, and commitment from all societal actors, including administrations, governments, clients, and end-users.

This initiative by Cementos Molins strengthens its commitment to sustainable construction and the circular economy, offering clients the possibility of obtaining eco-construction certifications.
