Emirates Steel Arkan to Reduce Cement Plant Carbon Footprint by 15% in Pilot Project

Emirates Steel Arkan (ESA), a leading steel and building materials manufacturer listed in Abu Dhabi, has announced a groundbreaking industrial pilot project in collaboration with Finland's MAGSORT. The initiative aims to reduce CO₂ emissions at its Al Ain cement plant by up to 15%. This ambitious project will utilize MAGSORT's proprietary solution to process steel slag while reducing limestone and fuel consumption, aligning with the UAE's long-term strategy (LTS) for achieving net zero by 2050, as committed to at COP28 last year.

Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, CEO of Emirates Steel Arkan Group, highlighted the project as a prime example of a circular economy within the UAE, showcasing strong economic synergy between the steel and building materials sectors while contributing to sustainable practices. The Al Ain cement plant's project marks the first large-scale industrial pilot in the MENA region, aiming to meet a 40% decarbonization target by 2030 and establish ESA as a leader in the cement industry's decarbonization efforts in the region.

The project's investment scale has not been disclosed, but it represents a significant step towards accelerating the decarbonization of the MENA region's cement industry. The local facility for carbon capture, transportation, and storage, established by ADNOC in Al Reyadah, Abu Dhabi, will process up to 800,000 tons of CO₂ captured annually from Emirates Steel Arkan.
