Korea Western Power Co. (KOWEPO) has announced a business agreement with Sungshin Cement for the joint development of overseas energy efficiency projects. This collaboration focuses on utilizing waste resources such as waste heat and landfill gas from cement factories for energy production, thereby reducing fossil fuel usage and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to contribute to South Korea's National Greenhouse Gas Reduction Goal (NDC), aiming for a 40% reduction by 2030 compared to 2018 levels.

The agreement involves the implementation of waste heat recovery power generation, a process that repurposes the high temperatures generated during cement production to produce electricity, leveraging boiler technology. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the project will secure emission rights under international reduction efforts outlined by the Paris Agreement. Furthermore, the emissions reduction achieved abroad will be transferred back to Korea to support the country's NDC targets.

The partnership plans to start with Vietnam, where legislation mandates waste heat recovery power generation at cement plants, and aims to expand into neighboring countries. Vietnam, along with Indonesia, Chile, and Uzbekistan, is among the seven nations that have entered into international emissions reduction agreements with Korea, enabling bilateral cooperation for diverse project developments.

KOWEPO's President, Kim Young-mun, expressed enthusiasm about the joint venture with Sungshin Cement, emphasizing the company's commitment to both domestic and international emissions trading schemes as part of efforts towards achieving carbon neutrality.
