Preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs show that Vietnam's clinker and cement exports in December reached over 2.53 million tons, earning nearly 98 million USD, up 0.9% in volume and down 3% in value compared to November 2023.

Throughout 2023, Vietnam exported more than 31.3 million tons of clinker and cement, equivalent to over 1.32 billion USD, down 1.2% in volume and 4.1% in value compared to the same period in 2022.

The average export price in December 2023 reached nearly 42.4 USD/ton, down nearly 3% compared to the same period. In terms of markets, Asian countries are the largest traders of Vietnam's cement. The Philippines is the leading country, accounting for 27% of the export turnover, followed by Bangladesh (17%) and Malaysia (5.2%). Cement and clinker exports have remained stagnant due to China's reduced imports (down 90% compared to the same period), as demand in the country's real estate market remains weak.

In contrast, Bangladesh is a growing market as cement and clinker exports to the country increased by 40% compared to the same period, thanks to increased investment in infrastructure.Notably, Australia is currently a positive market that is actively promoting imports in 2023.

Specifically, in the 12 months of 2023, Australia imported nearly 470,000 tons of clinker and cement from Vietnam, equivalent to 23.4 million USD, up 135% in volume and 120% in value. The average export price in the 12 months reached nearly 50 USD/ton, down 6.5% compared to the same period in 2022.

The demand for cement is high, but due to the environmental impact of cement production and high domestic production costs, Australia still imports a large amount of cement every year.

Prior to 2013, Australia's cement imports were mainly from China (48%), Taiwan (43%), and Thailand (7%). However, since 2013, Vietnam's cement and clinker have had a place in the Australian market, and their market share is increasing rapidly.
